Norwegian efforts to improve fisheries exploitation patterns

In order to improve exploitation patterns and reduce the problem of discards, Norway has over the years established a set of regulations and management measures. These measures are referred to as the «Discard Ban Package».

The main objective of Norwegian policy is to promote an exploitation pattern where recruits and undersized fish are spared, and where unwanted by-catch can be minimized.

This is being achieved through several interconnected measures which could be referred to as the «Discard Ban Package».
